Sir Michael Wilshaw Shares Inspiring Message with the Lyceum Group of Schools

Wednesday, 17th of June 2026

As we approach the end of the Academic Year many of us in education naturally feel tired and, perhaps, a bit stressed.

We have worked hard throughout the year to do our best for the students in our care. We now hope that the examination results when they come out in a few weeks’ time are a positive reflection of that work.

Teaching is hard, especially if we do it well. It demands commitment, selflessness and an ability to multitask at pace.

It sometimes takes a toll on our personal and family life, especially if we get the work/life balance out of kilter.

We should, therefore, enjoy our summer break, recharge the batteries and take a good long rest.

The important thing is that we come back at the start of the new academic year feeling refreshed and determined to renew our commitment to the students who, let us remind ourselves, have just  one chance of a good education.

We can never rest on our laurels and hope that each academic year will be the same as the last. Education is a dynamic force and one which demands that we adapt and change to meet the challenges of the coming year and the future.

I’m sure all the schools and colleges in the LYCEUM GROUP OF SCHOOLS will rise to this challenge of renewal and continue to achieve great things for their students.

I’m really looking forward to visiting the schools again in the new academic year and I hope to be with you in November.

Sri Lanka is such a wonderful country, full of promise and potential. It will only achieve that potential if the education system delivers good outcomes for young people.

I know the Lyceum Group understands this central mission and I have no concerns that it will renew its promise to parents and families in the course of the next academic year.

In the meantime, I wish everyone connected to the Lyceum Group a great summer holiday and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sir Michael Wilshaw

Chief Adviser to the Lyceum Group of Schools, Sri Lanka

Former Chief Inspector of Schools, United Kingdom
