The Department of Science for Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, organised the Technology Mini Project Exhibition on June 23 at the Lecture Hall Complex, Faculty of Technology. The technology project is a compulsory component of the firstyear curriculum. 330 first-year students were organised into 39 project teams, according to Conveyor Dr Chami Patabandige.

First runner-up was a MultiPurpose Garden Horse by Team TP25 who were awarded Rs 10,000, while the second runner-up was Team TP36 with their RC Lotus Harvester Boat that was awarded Rs 8,000. The third team recognized was Team TP03 with their Toxic Gas Detection System that was awarded Rs 5,000. Dr Patabandige said an external panel of judges evaluated the projects, awarded marks and selected the best projects of the exhibition for special recognition.

The judges were N N Dolowatta, Director/CEO Sri Lanka inventors Commission; Nishantha Jinasena, General Manager Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation; Indika Wijerathne, Manager Manufacturing R&D Samson Compounds; and Chamal Wijesinghe, Senior Chemist R&D Hemas Manufacturing. The projects that were exhibited originated from two-degree pragrammes – Engineering Technology and Bio  system Technology – and all team members were a mix of the two fields, Dr Patabandige said. The projects were judged according to four evaluative criteria.

The set criterion was that the projects had to be both innovative and creative, they had to be industry relevant, had to have market potentiality, had to have practical impact and all team members had to have been capable of presentation and question handling. In terms of being innovative and creative, there was a practical component where students had to choose based on what the country needs. In terms of being relevant they had to create products that were industry relevant; and while they didn’t have to contact industry to find relevance, Dr Patabandige said doing so could have been useful to the students.
