The much-anticipated 12th edition of Extravaganza was officially launched on 19 June 2026 at the BMICH, marking the beginning of one of Sri Lanka’s premier interuniversity sporting events. Held under the inspiring theme, “Let’s Rejoice and Conquer,” the Opening Ceremony brought together distinguished guests, students, sports enthusiasts, and sponsors to celebrate the spirit of athletic excellence and unity. The ceremony commenced with the arrival of dignitaries, who were welcomed through a vibrant traditional Kandyan dance performance, reflecting Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.
A symbolic lighting of the oil lamp followed, led by the Chief Guest, Deshabandu Julian Bolling, alongside Chairman of APIIT Sri Lanka, Mr. Bandula Egodage, Patron of the Student Activity Club of APIIT, Ms. Ruvini Natasha, and distinguished Guests of Honour, sponsors, and members of the organizing committee. The event was honoured by an esteemed panel of Guests of Honour representing the various sporting disciplines featured at Extravaganza 2026. They included Mr. Mursheed Zubair Doray (Rugby), Mr. Sandeep Gunarathne (Basketball), Ms. Malmi Hettiarachchi (Netball), Ms. Imesha Warnakulasuriya (Futsal), Mr. Gavin Karunanayaka (Swimming), Ms. Ovini Chandrasekara (Athletics), and Ms. Hasini Nusaka (Badminton).
A warm welcome address was delivered by Co-Chairperson Ashika Ambawatte, who highlighted the significance of the tournament and the collective efforts behind its success. The ceremony also featured the u n veiling of the official Extravaganza 2026 logo, introduced as a symbol of the tournament’s legacy and vision for the future. Attendees were treated to a sports introduction video showcasing the competitions planned for the year, including the introduction of Athletics as a new sporting category, making the tournament more inclusive and competitive than ever before. In his address, Chief Guest Deshabandu Julian Bolling shared the inspiring story of Olympic champion Jesse Owens and Luz Long, at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Amidst an atmosphere shaped by racial prejudice and Nazi ideology, Owens formed an unlikely friendship with German athlete Luz Long, who offered him guidance during the competition despite the intensity of the competition. Owens went on to win the gold medal, while Long claimed silver. Owens and Long went onto form a friendship that transcended time. Mr. Bolling used this story to highlight that true sportsmanship transcends race, nationality, and competition, reminding athletes that respect, integrity, and friendship are among the greatest victories sport can offer.

The organising committee was formally recognised through a pinning ceremony, while the official Extravaganza 2026 championship shield was revealed, symbolising the ultimate prize that participating teams will compete for throughout the tournament. Following the form al proceedings, Project Coordinators Kassie Mendis and Kithmi Rachela officially declared the Extrava g anza 2026 Press Conference open, providing members of the media with an opportunity to engage with organisers and key stakeholders. The Opening Ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Chairperson Divine Valerian, expressing gratitude to the distinguished guests, sponsors, organising committee, participants, and supporters who contributed towards making Extravaganza 2026 a reality.
