“Waariwaha”- The Rotaract Club of CCS

Thursday, 12th of July 2018

Water. Every drop of this precious resource carries an immeasurable value, which may not seem apparent to the more privileged of our society. More often than not, it is squandered and taken for granted, when millions worldwide suffer with limited or no access to it. According to recent statistics, only 50% of the population in Sri Lanka has pipe-borne water, with drinking water getting less and less available as we move away from Colombo and other urbanized regions, especially in very remote villages. “Waariwaha” was a community service project organized by the Rotaract Club of College of Chemical Sciences (CCS), through which drinking water was made accessible to the students of Bolunna Primary School.

Located in a remote part of Baduraliya in the Kalutara district, Bolunna Primary School is a humble school with 60 students receiving their education. The school shelters children from grades one to five and it was heartwarming to see such innocent children present such large smiles on their faces despite the situation they found themselves to be in. The school was struggling to secure a stable and safe supply of drinking water for years and there was no doubt that the water they were already consuming was in no way suitable for consumption.

The Rotaract Club of CCS had the good fortune to take initiative and with a donation of Rs. 100,000 generously contributed by Prof. S.P Deraniyagala, Rtr Sahan Gunarathne and the Rotary club of Colombo Regency, they were able to obtain a permanent water source for the school. A little ceremony was held and the water supply was declared open on the 25th of June by Prof S.P Deraniyagala. Due to its location in a rather rural area with little or no access to public transport, the school also lacks a teacher of English. Partnering with the Rotaract Club of Kelaniya, a fun and interactive English workshop was conducted by the Rotaract Club of CCS to instill keenness and interest in the English language, which will undoubtedly prove useful on the long run.
