India funds smart classroom project in the estates

Thursday, 11th of July 2024

The Cabinet of Ministers has agreed to amend a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Government agreed upon on December 18, 2023, to construct 60 smart classrooms for Advanced Level students in selected schools. Targeting the estate areas in Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Badulla Districts, the project is financially aided by the India Government and supported by the Sri Lankan Government.

Taking into account the practical problems in the implementation of the projects targeting only Advanced Level students, it was decided in a discussion conducted with the officials of the Indian High Commission, Ministry of Education, Department of Foreign Resources and National Budget Department to remove the said restriction. Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has taken into consideration the information presented by the Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development Jeevan Thondaman, and steps will be taken to implement the project by amending the relevant memorandum of understanding.
