Monday, 11th of March 2024

In a world where STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education is increasingly recognised as crucial for future success, The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) continues to uphold its commitment to academic excellence by nurturing mathematical talent and fostering a passion for problem-solving. Recently, OSC students showcased their exceptional abilities at the prestigious MathCounts competition held at the American International School in Chennai, alongside the SAISA Track & Field events, demonstrating their prowess on an international stage. MathCounts, a renowned non-profit organisation based in the United States, is dedicated to promoting mathematical achievement among middle school students.

It provides engaging programmes designed to enhance confidence and cultivate positive attitudes toward math and problem-solving. The competition features four challenging rounds—the Sprint round, the Target round, the Team round, and the Countdown round—where students aged 11 to 14 compete alongside and against their peers. Eight students from OSC ventured into this exhilarating journey, eager to test their mathematical skills and represent their school with distinction. Among them, Tashvi Aggarwal emerged as a shining star, claiming the coveted 1st place in the MathCounts competition. Tashvi’s exceptional dedication to mathematics and sharp analytical skills propelled her to the pinnacle of success, earning admiration and applause from peers and judges alike.

In the Academic Games category, Team OSC showcased exceptional teamwork and strategic thinking under the guidance of our MathCounts coach, Ms. Melinda Tondeur. Comprising Andre Hervy, Tiara Bhalla, Drrithi Chellaram, and Maya Joyce-Shah, the team secured an impressive 3rd place. Their collaborative efforts underscored the importance of cooperation and collective problem-solving in tackling challenging mathematical concepts. Ms. Tondeur’s invaluable guidance and support contributed significantly to their success. Further adding to OSC’s glory, Team OSC soared to 1st place in the Airplane Challenge, with Dylan Joyce-Shah, Tashvi Aggarwal, Evan Wijerathne, and Benjy Shaul unveiling an innovative prototype that impressed judges and competitors alike.

Additionally, in the Engineering Task, Team OSC once again clinched the top spot, showcasing their ingenuity and meticulous approach to problem-solving. These remarkable achievements highlight OSC’s commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also fostering innovation and creativity among its students. The success of OSC students at the MathCounts competition is a testament to the dedication and guidance of our educators, who tirelessly strive to instill a love for learning and a thirst for knowledge in every student.

It is a reflection of the school’s unwavering commitment to excellence and its relentless pursuit of academic and intellectual growth. Congratulations to Tashvi Aggarwal, Team OSC, and all participants for their outstanding performance. Your achievements illuminate OSC’s reputation as a beacon of academic excellence and serve as an inspiration to the entire school community. For Sri Lankan parents seeking the best possible education for their children, OSC offers a unique learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and mathematical proficiency.
