Budget allocations to be made for school repairs and development

Friday, 10th of November 2023

The Education Ministry is planning to allocate money for infrastructure development and building repairs after a lapse of two years, minister Susil Premajayantha said. He said that due to Covid-19 and the economic crisis, money could not be allocated, but from the budgetary allocations for next year they hope to spend money for urgent development activities and repairs. Due to the lack of funds, some development projects in schools had to be abandoned. The minister said that they may have to call for tenders again as some of the contractors had withdrawn.

According to the current plan, the Education Ministry expects to allocate Rs 26 billion for infrastructure and school buildings for the upcoming year. Of the allocations, Rs 3.9 billion is to be used for urgent repairs for national schools including repairs of roofs and buildings. Rs 4.3 billion is to be used for development in primary sections. Another Rs 20 billion will be used for general education, while Rs 1 billion will be used for teacher training. Rs 390 million will be used for special education purposes. Rs 700 million is due to be used for other school buildings. -DWI
