The 7th Research Conference of the Post Graduate Institute of Social Sciences was held on December 19 at Peradeniya University. This year’s theme was Bridging Ideas, Shaping Tomorrow Research Frontier 2024, according to Professor of Economics Wasantha Athukorala. “Our purpose in organising the conference was to provide a platform for scholars to exchange knowledge, ideas and research findings and thereby foster academic collaboration and innovation,” Prof Athukorale said.
The keynote speaker for the event was Central Bank Assistant Governor Dr Chadranath Amerakoon. The speech was on sustaining stability and economic growth and Sri Lanka’s economy being at a crossroads. Prof Athukorale added that the research conference seeks to highlight the relevance and impact of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences in shaping informed, inclusive sustainable policies and practices.
Guest of honour was the Chief of Education UNICEF Sri Lanka, Erin Tanner. Her speech focused on the importance of education in developing a nation. Prof Athukorale said the Peradeniya University received 135 research papers, some Lankan and some foreign. Of that, 75 research papers were selected for presentation. (PW)
