The balancing of teacher and principal transfers should be expedited, Prime Minister/Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya said.
Rejecting transfers in the education sector has been a long-standing practice, she said, and it is the only sector in public service that does not comply with transfers.
She was speaking at a meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education.
The committee considered steps taken on teachers and principals who have failed to comply with such transfers.
Policy decisions regarding admission of students with disabilities to universities were also discussed at this meeting. Starting from the next academic year, the policy will be implemented based on a quota system for all disciplines, and a merit-based district quota system will also provide university admissions to students with disabilities.
The progress of subcommittees appointed by the committee were taken up for discussion. The committee also discussed issues pertaining to education in various districts.
Several MPs and officials participated in the committee meeting.
