Empowering Leadership Through Adventure: A Prefect’s Experience at the Royal Institute International School Prefects’ Camp 2024

Wednesday, 14th of August 2024

The recent prefects’ camp, held on the 3rd and 4th of August 2024 at CHE Adventure Park in Asmadala, Hanwella, in the Colombo district, bordering the Kelani River, was one of the best experiences I’ve had for learning teamwork and communication. Organized by Mr. Suraj Hewaarachchi, the Vice Principal of the Nugegoda Branch, under the guidance of Academic Director Dr. Nirodha Bandara, the camp brought together 189 prefects from all five branches; Havelock Town, Nugegoda, Girls’ School (Colombo 06), Maharagama, and Gampaha, along with 10 teachers.

Packed with activities like zip lining, air rifling, archery, and rope climbing, the camp offered us excellent opportunities to hone our leadership skills. From the outset, the camp was filled with a positive and hopeful vibe. Zip lining over the Kelani River was particularly thrilling; it required significant courage and made us trust our equipment and instructors as we sailed through the air. Archery and air rifling were all about concentration and determination, teaching us to stay calm under pressure. The encouragement we received from our peers during these activities reinforced the importance of support in a team.

Rope climbing was both fun and challenging, requiring physical strength and mental endurance. This activity really highlighted the need for strategic planning and effective communication. Those who finished first offered tips and encouragement to the rest of us, showing how important shared knowledge and teamwork are. Throughout the camp, meals and refreshments were provided, keeping us well-nourished and energized. The delicious food added to the enjoyment of the experience. One of the most memorable moments was the bonfire and BBQ night. Gathering around the bonfire, we sang songs, danced, and bonded over a delightful feast.

This relaxed atmosphere fostered a sense of unity and friendship. At the end of the camp, we reflected on our experiences, shared insights, and created lasting memories. Overall, the prefects’ camp at CHE Adventure Park was a transformative experience for me and my fellow prefects. It not only provided thrilling adventures but also offered profound lessons in teamwork, communication, and leadership. The activities pushed us out of our comfort zones, encouraging us to support each other and work collaboratively toward common goals. These insights will undoubtedly help us in our roles as prefects, enabling us to lead with confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of community.
