A/L ICT facilities to be developed

Friday, 8th of March 2024

The Cabinet approved a joint proposal on the ‘Suhuru School Project’ to develop the teaching of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The project aims to equip 1,000 schools that teach ICT as a subject for the GCE Advanced Level exam. The need to develop the industry was identified “to drive economic growth and innovation” as it falls in line with Sri Lanka’s digital economy strategy, which according to the Technology Ministry, aims to enhance economic competitiveness, create high-paying jobs, and deliver trusted and inclusive public services.

Fifty percent of the telecommunication development fee collected from license fees is to be used in the project. The Cabinet approved the joint proposal submitted by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Education Minister Susil Premajayantha this week. Furthermore, a scholarship programme will provide financial assistance to children of 5,000 low-income families studying ICT for the GCE Advanced Level exam. The scholarships will be supported by the President’s Fund. - DW
