The ‘School Food Programme’ is in place at 7,902 schools throughout 100 education zones across the island, serving a total of 1.08 million students. A student’s daily meal costs Rs85. The committee attached to this has revealed that as a result of pricing volatilities, an approximate amount of Rs110 is paid for lunch. Save the Children has committed to supply 200,000 children in 917 designated schools with 300,000 food items for 2024. The resolution presented by Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha to increase the cost of a student’s meal to Rs110 and introduce the ‘School Food Programme’ for 170 days in 2024 for primary school students was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. -NA
