School clusters to be formed to work together on issues

Friday, 23rd of February 2024

A new system where a lead school will be selected to provide leadership to a cluster of 10 schools each will be introduced by the Education Ministry next month, Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha said. The objective of the scheme is that the principal of the lead school will help co-ordinate with the cluster schools to address a range of issues including staffing, lack of buildings and facilities, training requirements, and sports facilities.

Among the responsibilities of the lead school, the principal would be to coordinate with the respective principal and find solutions to the shortage of teachers by providing staff from his or her school temporarily or finding them from another cluster school. Another responsibility would be to identify schools that may be facing closure and take necessary steps to prevent it.

“If there are fewer students for the A/L classes, a decision would have to be taken if they would continue with the A/L classes or close that section after encouraging remaining students to select a nearby school,” the Minister said. Under the plan, some 1,220 schools will be selected as lead schools, so all schools in the country are covered. Zonal education directors will be responsible for selecting the schools. Minister Premajayantha is due to meet with the Governors of the provinces and Chief Secretaries to finalise the plan next week. -DWI
