Professor Lakshman Samaranayake to receive UNESCO honourary chair

The inaugural UNESCO Honorary SACTD Endowed Professorship/Chair, recognising outstanding services to teacher education and university education in Sri Lanka, will be awarded to Professor Lakshman Samaranayake at a ceremony to be held at Temple Trees on May 29. The award will be conferred by Prime Minister Harini Aamarasuriya.

Professor Samaranayake, an alumnus of the University of Peradeniya, has earned international academic distinction over the course of his career. He has received global recognition from leading universities and professional organisations, reflecting his contributions to higher education and research. An academic, administrator, and researcher in microbiology, Professor Samaranayake during his tenure as Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong, led the Faculty to achieve the Number One ranking globally in the QS World University Rankings.

Demonstrating commitment to his alma mater and to the advancement of higher education in Sri Lanka, Professor Samaranayake has also made multi- million-rupee philanthropic contributions to establish endowed and research professorships at the University of Peradeniya, strengthening its academic and research capacity. This inaugural conferment marks a milestone in Sri Lanka’s higher education landscape, honouring a scholar whose dedication to teacher education, university leadership, research excellence, and academic philanthropy has made a national and international impact.
