Cabinet approved the proposal to covert several National Colleges of Education (NCoE) into Sri Lanka University of Education offering degree programmes for teachers, this week. Education Minister Susil Premajayantha submitted the proposal. Under the proposal some 4,000 candidates will be enrolled in to the University where they could follow a four-year degree course instead of the diploma offered by the NCoE.
An expert committee appointed to make recommendations on the establishment of the university, recommended that 19 out of 20 existing NCoE be upgraded as university campuses. The selection to the university will be based on the Z-score marks. The selection process will be based on the next year’s GCE (A/L) results. After the degree is received graduates would be able to teach A/L classes as well. Currently, those with a diploma from the NCoE are only able to teach up to Grade 11. -DWI
