CEA honors environment short video winners
The awards ceremony for the short video creation competition, organised by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA), was held recently. The competition aimed to encourage users of social media platforms to awaken environmental consciousness among the public and to engage citizens in the environmental conservation process. The occasion was attended by Professor Tilak Hewawasam, Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority, Kapila Rajapaksha, Director General, along with other CEA officials, school students, and the competition winners.
Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody was chief guest. Parallel to the event, a training workshop on short video production was conducted to further polish the communication skills of young creators. Focusing directly on building resilient cities for a sustainable future in the face of urbanization and global climate change, the 2026 World Environment Day program series was implemented under the global theme ‘Urgent Climate Action’.
The theme of the competition was ‘Let’s contribute to mitigating climate change through proper waste management’. The competition aimed to mainstream broad social awareness on using modern technology. Speaking at the event, the Deputy Minister pointed out that taking measures through scientific, technological, and educational approaches is extremely timely to confront existing environmental challenges.
He said the government is providing support to strengthen legal provisions while preparing the background for this cause. The government will amend the National Environmental Act after 26 years to suit contemporary needs. The CEA and the Ministry of Environment extended their appreciation to all winners of this year’s competition, who creatively socialised the message of environmental protection through modern communication tools and social media.
