Cabinet approval to include Japanese language in school syllabus

Monday, 16th of January 2023

The Cabinet has approved the inclusion of Japanese language learning in the school curriculum, and the National Institute of Education is currently working on implementing the proposal, Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said. The minister stated this at an event held last week to sign an agreement between the Ministry and a high-level Japanese diplomatic delegation to establish a Vocational Training Centre in Sri Lanka targeting employment in Japan’s automobile industry.

Minister Nanayakkara explained that he has made the necessary arrangements for Sri Lanka to become number one among the labour-supplying countries to Japan. The minister went on to say that with the intervention of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB), 5,000 people are being given Japanese language training. He added that 17,000 had faced the Japanese language proficiency exam held recently. -YP
