The 16th convocation of the 37th batch of GIC (Graduateship in Chemistry) graduates and the 45th batch of DLTC (Diploma in Laboratory Technology in Chemistry) diplomates, was held on the 15th of March 2021 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. The convocation was declared open by Prof. Sagarika Ekanayake, President of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, followed by the conferment of designations and certificates to 130 Graduate Chemists, 6 Advanced Diplomates in Chemistry, and 88 Diplomates in Laboratory Technology in Chemistry.
Students recognised for their excellent performances in both GIC and DLTC programmes, were felicitated. The Shireen Jayasuriya Memorial Gold Medal for the Best performance in all parts of the Graduateship Examination and the Dr. R. O. B. Wijesekara Felicitation fund award for the Best All Rounder of the GIC program was awarded to Mr. Yasiru Vindula Alwis. The Dr. G. C. N Jayasuriya Award for the First in batch of the DLTC program was awarded to Ms. A. M. S. S. S. Aasiya. The Convocation Address was delivered by the Chief Guest, Prof. Sarath Amunugama – President of the Royal Institute.
Mr. Yasiru Vindula Alwis and Ms. A. M. S. S. S. Aasiya, the valedictorians of the GIC and DLTC programmes respectively, also addressed the gathering, expressing words of wisdom and gratitude from the experience garnered throughout the course of their study at their alma mater. The ceremony was graced by Prof. Sujatha Hewage (Dean of College of Chemical Sciences), Mr. E. G. Somapala (Director of DLT Programme), Mr. N. I. N. S. Nadarasa (Registrar) and other distinguished academics.The much anticipated ceremony was finally held in true grandeur, amidst many an obstacle, fulfilling the long awaited dream of the graduates and diplomates of 2019.
