Curtin University Colombo Leads Global Learning with Immersive Social Entrepreneurship Exchange

Curtin University Colombo recently concluded a landmark Global Mobility Programme, hosting 23 students and two staff members from Curtin Perth for a week-long Social Entrepreneurship Exchange that blended academic learn - ing, cultural immersion, and industry engagement. The programme, held from June 23–29, 2025, positioned Curtin Colombo as a leader in global, impact-driven education by offering participants handson exposure to Sri Lanka’s rich social innovation landscape. A Global Classroom Without Walls

Over the course of the week, students stepped beyond tradi - tional classrooms to experience design thinking workshops, microfinance as a development model, and entrepreneurship skills training. Sessions on leadership, negotiation, and emotional intelligence were complemented by networking with established Sri Lankan social entrepreneurs, who shared their journeys of driv - ing change in local communi - ties.

Immersed in Culture and Industry

The exchange offered partici - pants a unique opportunity to engage directly with local enterprises and communities. Visits to Viveca Rattan Furniture and Thusare Talking Hands provided powerful insights into sustainable busi - ness models that combine profitability with social impact. Field expeditions to Kithul pro - duction societies and tea facto - ries in Sabaragamuwa allowed students to see how traditional industries innovate to balance economic growth with commu - nity development. Cultural experiences, from guided heritage tours to tradi - tional cuisine, enriched the learning journey, helping stu - dents connect deeply with Sri Lanka’s vibrant context.

Inspiring Entrepreneurial Mindsets

A standout highlight was the ‘Think Like a Founder’ work - shop led by Professor Steve McKenna, which drew over 700 registrations, with 250 partici - pants selected to explore entre - preneurial strategy, mindset, and leadership. The session received resounding praise and underlined Curtin Colombo’s ability to convene high-calibre learning experiences with glob - al resonance. Students also collaborated in project development sessions, pitching innovative ideas to expert panels of industry men - tors who provided feedback on scalability and social impact potential.

Strengthening Global Connections

The programme’s distinction was further highlighted when the delegation was hosted by the Australian High Commissioner, reflecting the Australian Government’s sup - port for initiatives that strengthen academic and cul - tural ties between the two coun - tries.

The exchange not only deep - ened collaboration between Curtin Colombo and Curtin Perth, but also cemented Curtin Colombo’s growing rep - utation as a hub for global engagement, innovation, and cross- cultural learning.

For participating students, the exchange was more than an academic programme, it was an immersive journey into leader - ship, innovation, and social impact.
