Inspiring Innovation and Academic Excellence through Research at APIIT School of Computing

Monday, 3rd of June 2024

APIIT School of Computing promotes research opportunities beyond the classroom for both students and faculty. Collaborative research in areas such as Machine Learning, IoT, Blockchain, Cyber Security, and Computer Vision is strongly encouraged. The School of Computing provides funding to support student-initiated and student-lecturer collaborative research, resulting in publications in international journals and conferences. These presentations offer students invaluable opportunities to enhance their professional profiles.

APIIT’s Computing students gain research experience primarily through their “Research-Based Final Year Project.” Guided by an academic supervisor, students in Computer Science, Software Engineering, and Cyber Security explore relevant domains, identify research gaps, and implement solutions. Upon completing their Final Year Projects, students can publish their research papers in recognised journals and present them at local and international conferences. The APIIT School of Computing also hosts project symposiums, allowing students to showcase their software products to panels of industry and domain specialists.

The 2023 Project Symposium saw several students demonstrating their projects, with some securing funding due to their commercial potential. APIIT will host its fourth International Research Conference (AIRC 2024) on October 5th, 2024, at the Commercial Credit Academy in Bolgoda. The School of Computing, a key organiser of the conference, will offer tracks in Machine Learning, Computer Vision, and Cyber Security. AIRC 2024 is organised in partnership with Staffordshire University and Virtusa, with a paper submission deadline of June 20th.

The School of Computing recently conducted a series of research workshops aimed at training students to produce publishable research papers. The workshops were led by Dr. Chaman Wijesiriwardana, Director for Staff Development and Quality Assurance, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Moratuwa. The series covered key topics such as introducing research, identifying research problems, conducting literature reviews, research methodologies, and best practices. These workshops were specifically designed to prepare students for participation at the AIRC 2024.

Research is an integral part of APIIT’s mission to nurture young people to be innovative, enterprising and entrepreneurial and become active participants in the social and economic development of our society. In the backdrop of rapid advancements in AI and technology, the need to inspire original thought and encourage innovative research among students has become more crucial than ever. APIIT’s commitment to nurturing a research-oriented culture enriches students’ academic experience while equipping them with the skills and mindset needed to contribute to the ever-evolving technological landscape.
