AOD Graduate Poornima Meegammana Earns Esteemed Social Action Award at UK Alumni Awards Sri Lanka 2023-24

Poornima Meegammana, an outstandingly talented alumna of AOD, has been honoured with the prestigious Social Action Award at the UK Alumni Awards 2023-24. This recognises her remarkable work as a designer catalysing social change through her creativity and also highlights the pivotal role that AOD played in shaping her journey during both her BA and MA studies. Meegammana’s success is a testament to the role played by AOD in shaping her into the accomplished young designer that she is today. Recognising AOD’s pivotal role, Poornima acknowledges how the institute fostered her innate desire to make a difference through design. Her success stands as a testament to the significance of educators who attentively nurture individual aspirations, identify unique talents, and empower students to transform their dreams into tangible realities.

Poornima Meegammana, the visionary behind Nextgen Girls in Technology (Nextgen), has been recognised for her outstanding contributions. Named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2022, she has devoted the last decade to promoting technology education for girls, earning global accolades such as the UNESCO Prize and ITU WSIS Prizes. Honoured as Sri Lanka’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year, she leads the Nextgen Skills programme at the Shilpa Sayura Foundation, impacting over 2000 university students and 1000 school students. In her statement upon winning the Social Action Award at the UK Alumni Awards Sri Lanka 2024, Poornima expressed her gratitude, attributing her success to the transformative education and experiences she received at AOD, following Northumbria University and De Montfort University curricula.
