Teacher shortage continues, Cabinet approval sought for recruitment

Monday, 2nd of December 2024

Cabinet approval has been sought to recruit 2,500 graduate teachers for English. The objective is to fill vacancies for English teachers created due to resignations to travel abroad and leaving the profession for other reasons. Meanwhile plans are underway to recruit teachers for languages as well. Another 4,700 teachers are to be recruited for other GCE O/L and A/L subjects. The shortage of teachers was mainly created as some 4,700 teachers who sat the Principal Service exam were selected as principals. The Education Ministry is expecting 4,500 teachers to enter the system from the Colleges of Education after completing their three-year diploma programme. Some 2,700 teachers are also to be enrolled in schools in the estate sector.
