Wednesday, 30th of October 2024

The Ministry of Education has decided to fill all teacher vacancies in both national and provincial schools within the next year. Ministry of Education Secretary Tilaka Jayasundara told Education Times all vacancies will be filled; also filling teacher requirements of STEM education. Ms Jayasundara said a team has been appointed to ascertain the required teachers in schools across the country, and after the data is received the database in the Ministry will be updated. Accordingly, by the end of the year they would have full details of the number of teachers according to the subjects.

The Provincial Council systems too would be given approval keeping with the teacher requirements. The scheme is expected to bring an end to the unregulated teacher recruitment practice. Allocations for recruitment will be made in the next budget. Meanwhile, Education Ministry sources said that estimates show that some 18,600 teacher vacancies exist. The Ministry of Education also has sought Finance Ministry approval to recruit teachers to the vacancies created due to some of the teachers completing the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service exam and some others joining the principal services. The government expects 4,500 teachers from Colleges of Education to enter the workforce. (DWI)
