Less school days in 2025 due to many public holidays

The number of days during which school can be in session for next year has been reduced by about 30 days due to public holidays, the Education Ministry said. In keeping with a circular issued August 8, 1997 by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education all schools in the island should conduct classes for 210 days a year. However, due to the number of public holidays in 2025, it will be impossible to conduct classes for 210 days. Consequently, for 2025, all government approved private schools and piriven will be in session for 181 days. The Ministry, this week, released the 2025school calendar for Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim schools.

The first term has been divided into three phases for both Sinhala and Tamil medium schools. The first phase is scheduled from Monday, January 27 to Friday, March 14 (vacation would be from March 15 to 31). The second phase of the first terms for both Sinhala and Tamil schools would be from Tuesday, April 1 to Friday, April 11 (vacation from April 12 to 20). The third phase will be from Monday, April 21 to Friday May 9 (vacation from May 10 to 13). The second term for Sinhala and Tamil medium schools would be from Wednesday, May 14 to Thursday, August 7 (vacation from August 8 to 17).

The third term of Sinhala and Tamil medium schools have been divided into two phases. The first phase from Monday, August 18 to Friday, October 17 (vacation from October 18 to November 16). The second phase of the third term is scheduled to be held from Monday, November 17 to Friday, December 19. The school calendar issued for Muslim schools has slightly different school closing dates from the third phase of the first term where the schools which open on Monday, April 21 would close for vacation on May 23 while vacation would be granted from May 24 to May 27.

The second term for Muslim schools would commence from Wednesday, May 28 until Tuesday, August 19, (vacation from August 20 to 24). The first phase of the third term for Muslim schools would be from Monday, August 25 to Friday, October 31 (vacation from November 1 to 16). This calendar could be amended subject to conditions in compliance with Circular issued August 8, 1997, if provincial ministries of education require to make changes to school calendar in accordance with the circumstances in their respective provinces.
