SPRIX Japan launches TOFAS exam in Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda and Highlands College Maharagama
The SPRIX Ltd Corporation launches for the first time in Sri Lanka the TOFAS examination in Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda and Highlands College Maharagama. Education Times spoke with the manager of the TOFAS Sri Lanka division, Ms. Yumi Sano, about the special occasion. Ms. Yumi Sano, who arrived in Sri Lanka to take part in the Award Ceremony for the new TOFAS certificate-holders, held in Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda, explained how TOFAS works and how it aims to benefit students and their parents. TOFAS (Test of Fundamental Academic Skills) tests English Vocabulary, Programming, and Calculation skills in students, which Ms. Yumi Sano says are essential lifelong skills.
TOFAS gives students the confidence and motivation to improve and excel in these skills while giving teachers and parents detailed feedback on the student’s performance so that areas that can be improved upon are focused on. Students that score more than 80% on the tests receive a certificate from TOFAS that includes their local (from the country they took the test in) and global ranking, allowing them to compete on an international stage. TOFAS tests are structured in levels of difficulty, and the tests are given according to age group. The tests are also held twice a year to either allow students to advance more quickly or repeat the test if they score poorly, and Ms. Yumi Sano mentioned the tests are also held completely online for the convenience of students.
Ms. Yumi Sano said that TOFAS was initiated in both Sujatha Vidyalaya and Highlands College because of their experience in Japanese Exchange Programmes and the administration’s enthusiasm to try novel innovations and flexibility in arranging the programs. The tests were first conducted on the 9th and 10th of July, in which 1720 students from both schools participated. 580 students passed with more than 80% score and thus received certificates in the Award Ceremony held on the 7th of October. Special Guests at the Award Ceremony included the Deputy Head of Mission from the Embassy of Japan, Mr. Katsuki Kotaro, and representatives from the Private School division of the Ministry of Education. The joint administration of Sujatha Vidyalaya and Highlands College also said their management focuses on developing well-balanced personalities through a methodical curriculum and strives to provide opportunities for students to build up their personalities.
