The Government is planning to recruit 8,700 new teachers from education colleges and those who have graduated. Of them 4700 will be recruited from the colleges while 4,000 recruits will be graduates. The graduates will be absorbed to the national schools to teach in G.C.E Ordinary Level and G.C.E Advanced Level classes. Of the new recruits from education colleges 1,700 will be assigned to teach in schools from grade one to grade five. The teachers who will be recruited to national schools will be required to remain in the same school for ten years and will not be entitled to request for transfers. The 4,000 graduate teachers will be recruited from a list of 58,000 graduates who have been placed on a waiting list for employment in the state sector.
Under the graduate criteria they should have graduated before December 31, 2019 to be eligible to apply. An Education Ministry official said when the new recruitment drive is completed the excess teachers in the respective schools will be transferred to other schools which have teacher shortages. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has directed the Education Ministry to complete the recruitment drive this year to complete syllabuses which were affected during the COVID-19 situation and to also meet the demand in rural schools.
