Sunday, 10th of December 2023

The launch of Volume IV of the Law Journal of Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC) on the 25th of November 2023 was a momentous occasion that garnered anticipation from all those related to the legal profession. The event, held at the RIC Auditorium marked a significant milestone for the institute and its commitment to fostering legal scholarship and discourse. Distinguished guests and esteemed dignitaries graced the occasion, making it a memorable event for all in attendance. The Chief Guest, Mr. Ikram Mohamed, President’s Counsel added prestige to the launch with this presence. One of the highlights of the launch was the engaging panel discussion that has become a tradition at the event.

The theme for the discussion was ‘Gaining perspectives on how it is to work at the Attorney General’s Department, Law Firms and Private Practice.’ The panel comprised eminent personalities in the legal field, namely Mr. Kalinga Indatissa, President’s Counsel and Former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka; Mr. Chanaka De Silva, Founding Partner of Nithya Partners and Mrs. Farzana Jameel, Former Senior Additional Solicitor General. Their insights provided valuable perspectives on the legal profession, enriching those looking forward to entering the profession.

Volume IV of the RIC Law Journal showcases a diverse range of articles contributed by individuals spanning from highly qualified lawyers to budding law students. The collection of submissions reflects the dedication of the legal community to exploring various legal areas and sharing knowledge. This collaborative effort contributes to the intellectual growth of the profession and serves as a valuable resource for those interested in law. A majority of articles in Volume IV relate to intellectual property rights, administrative law, family law, artificial intelligence, company law, conflict of laws, criminal law, data protection, international law, international humanitarian law, international protection of human rights, public international law and admiralty law.

These articles went through strenuous reviews by both the editorial committee consisting of law students of RIC from 2nd year and above, and the senior review committee lead by President’s Counsel and Senior Lecturer Mr. Seevali Amitirigala. The Senior Review Committee plays a pivotal role in bringing the journal to light. Their collective expertise in diverse legal areas adds depths to the evaluation process and upholds the standard of the RIC Law Journal each year. The Senior Review Committee for Volume IV comprised of Mr. Seevali Amitirigala, President’s Counsel, Ms. Sandunil Meepe, Professor Naazima Kamardeen, Dr. Asanga Welikala, Dr. Nishara Mendis, Dr. Dan Malika Gunasekara, Mr. Amila Siriwardena, Mr. Mahela Liyanage, Mr. Rashmin Tirimanne De Silva and Mr. Kavindu Hewa Geeganage.

The success of the Volume IV launch wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of various stakeholders, including authors, the senior review committee, and the editorial committee. However, the Law Students’ Association of RIC (LSARIC) plays a central role in bringing together these components and orchestrating a seamless event each year. The event’s success was further enhanced by the support received from our sponsors with Muve Colombo as the platinum sponsor for the launch of Volume IV of the RIC Law Journal 2023. Muve Colombo not only provided financial support but also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the legal profession and academic institutions. Additionally, the financial contribution provided by Royal Institute of Colombo underscores the institute’s commitment to encouraging legal scholarship and academic initiatives. These contributions not only facilitated the success of events but also enriched the academic journey of its students.
