Consumer has a right to claim damages - Dr Prathiba Tells APIIT MBA Students

Respected policy advocate Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa addressed the weekly APIIT MBA Diaries webinar last week on the theme ‘Product Quality; the right of a consumer’ citing the 727 explosions related to LP gas leaks and one death in the country. The speaker said that “ Every business organization has obligation to ensure that the product is fit for purpose. If not, the consumer has the right to take action legally said the Former Human Rights Commissioner of Sri Lanka.

Respected outspoken personality, Prathiba Mahanamahewa is the Rector of Sri Palee Campus at the University of Colombo. Earlier, he held prestigious international positions of the Dean and Professor of the University of Technology Jamaica, West Indies. He was the founder Dean Faculty of Law, Kothalawala Defence University. He also has wide international experience, commencing from his post-graduate studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia, followed by research and teaching assignments at a number of local and international universities between 1999 to 2021.

He was appointed as an Adjunct Professor at the John. F. Kennedy University, the USA in 2017. Dr. Prathiba had served in various academic advisory boards and research committees in local and international institutions such as the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka. He is an international reviewer for journals such as ScienceDirect Elsevier. He represented Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights International committee in 2012 and was instrumental in preparing the Universal periodic report for the UNHRC in 2012 and also prepared the Sri Lanka National Human Rights Commission Annual Report to present to the parliament in 2011.

He is a professionally qualified lawyer as well as an international arbitrator. He was appointed as the chairman of the IT law committee of the Sri Lanka Bar Association. He has published several journal articles and conference proceedings as well as 200 newspaper articles, 50 webinars, and more than 100 TV discussions related to the discipline of law. Sri Lanka is undoubtedly going through one of the toughest times in the history of the economy with financial issues and the challenge of governance with the LPG issue.
