Creative sword dance wins national recognition
The dance troupe from Welimada Dambawinna Sri Saranankara Maha Vidyalaya with Principal W M Sriyani Wijekoon, dance teachers Nilanka Pathirana and Susantha Pushpakumara — after securing second place in the All-Island Dance Competition with their creative sword dance performance.
Representing the Uva Province in the ‘schools with less than 300 students’ category at the All- Island Dance Competition — held recently at Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha — the ‘Kadu Nirmanathmaka’ (Creative Sword Dance) troupe from Welimada Dambawinna Sri Saranankara Maha Vidyalaya secured second place among teams from 8 provinces. The male “creative sword dance” troupe that previously participated in this dance competition secured first place in the Uva Province. This dance was choreographed and the students trained by the teachers in charge of dance, P Nilanka Pathrana and K G Susantha Pushpakumara, under the guidance of the school principal, W M Sriyani Wijekoon.
