Future X education and career fair hosted by S Thomas’ College OBA

Monday, 11th of November 2024

The Old Boys Association (OBA) of S Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia is set to host its third education and career fair, themed ‘Future X,’ on January 25 and 26, 2025, from 10 am to 8 pm, the Grand Marquee of the Hilton, Colombo. This event aims to bridge the gap for the many students who finish their A/Level exams and those looking to further their education, offering them insights and opportunities in higher education in various career paths. At a media conference announcing the event, the Chairman of the Organising Committee Rukshan Kuru- Utumpala highlighted the OBA’s commitment to supporting the next generation of students.

Founded in 1886, the OBA is one of the oldest alumni institutions in Asia, he said. “While being proud of our history and heritage, we also need to look forward and we need to have a forward view. So in terms of looking at what we can offer the next generation of students looking to further their careers and educational aspirations, we need to look at what new types of jobs are coming up. And hence, we came up with this concept of Future X as a theme for the career fair,” Mr. Kuru-Utumpala stated, emphasising the need for students to explore new and emerging career opportunities, particularly in the tech sector, as traditional jobs become obsolete.

Secretary of the OBA Imran Hassan explained that the fair is designed to provide solutions for students who may feel lost in their post-A/Level journey. The Future X fair will take place shortly after the local A/ Level exams conclude. With only about 20 per cent of students who sit for the exams gaining entry into local State universities, the event is positioned as a critical resource for the 80 per cent of students seeking further educational pathways, Mr Hassan said, adding that a curated selection of 50 stalls will be featured at the event. Acting Sub-Warden of S Thomas College Asanka Perera emphasised the importance of career guidance, particularly for those students who may not pursue higher education.

“As one of the few schools which have a career guidance unit, we encourage as many students as possible to find opportunities whether in local universities, or local institutes, or foreign universities, or whatever it is, to build their career and to move forward,” he said, urging students to engage with exhibitors to gain a comprehensive understanding of their potential futures. As Future X approaches, the OBA calls on the community to support this initiative, which seeks to empower the next generation of Lankan students. - Dilushi Wijesinghe
