Wednesday, 24th of April 2024

The Education Ministry is going ahead with a recruitment programme of 15,000 graduate teachers after the completion of a court case regarding the recruitment. Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that 2,500 teachers will be recruited from the Western Province. The rest will be recruited from other provinces based on the requirements. They will teach O/L and A/L classes. The recruitment process was delayed more than eight months due to the court case. Meanwhile, 3,000 teachers of Science and Mathematics will be recruited soon while another 1,000 will recruited for English.

By the end of the year, 4,600 will graduate from the Education Colleges. They will be directed to Primary classes. In addition, 2,500 Tamil medium teachers will be recruited to be deployed in the estate sector. Cabinet approval has also been received to recruit some 3,000 teachers to fill vacancies for those teachers retiring by the end of the year. The enlistment of 22,000 teachers of those who have already been employed as graduate assistants has been held up due to another pending case. Minister Premajayantha said that a major part of the recruitment of teachers could be completed this year, thereby addressing the teacher shortage. -DWI
