Unit to detect and deter drugs in schools

Friday, 15th of December 2023

A new unit will be established in each province to combat drug use in schools and surrounding areas. This was decided after Education Minister Susil Premajayantha discussed it with Acting Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon and senior police officials this week. The Minister instructed the IGP to take necessary action to combat drug use and sales among schoolchildren. To facilitate the operation, a hotline will be set up in the provinces to obtain information about drugs in schools.

The National Dangerous Drug Control Board, Family Health Bureau, Medical Officers of Health and related agencies will be involved in the operation. Minister Premajayantha said that they hope to build a large network to crack down on the drug trade involving schoolchildren. He said there has been an increase in the distribution of drugs around schools as well in schools, and that attempts are being made to sell ICE (Crystal methamphetamine) to students – mainly those above Grade 6. The Minister said there would be monthly briefings for principals, staff, and parents on the progress made. He added that Police persons would not be deployed in uniform. -DWI
