Teacher recruitment next year

Friday, 1st of December 2023

The Education Ministry is planning to recruit 20,000 teachers next year, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said. The recruitment will take place in batches with priority given to filling vacancies created due to a multitude of reasons including teachers retiring, resignations, and quitting their jobs without notice. Among those to be recruited will be 5,000 teachers to fill vacancies in the GCE (A/L) stream where teachers are required for some 46 subjects with a particular focus on mathematics and English among other subjects. Cabinet approval has been granted for the recruitment.

Another 2,000 teachers are required for National Schools to teach mathematics and science. Cabinet approval has been given for these recruitments too. There are also plans to recruit 10,000 teachers to provincial schools, where the total requirement is 15,000. The Ministry had earlier planned to recruit 26,000 teachers from the Development Assistants who are already serving. However, plans have stalled due to a few cases pending. The Ministry plans to go ahead with this plan after the court cases are cleared. The overall number of teacher vacancies in schools is 41,000. Vacancies have risen after 5,000 Grade III Principals were appointed drawing them from the teacher numbers. Due to the shortage, principals of some schools have had to close down some of the classes.
