The four students, Robolge Pahanma Upani Lenora (Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Galle), Sithupa Danithu Nethmina Palihawadana (Royal College, Colombo), Sreemaathuri Sinthanaichselvan (Ramanathan Hindu Ladies’ College, Colombo) and Vajra Neth Wijesooriya (Ananda College, Colombo) won four bronze medals at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held from 21st to 30th July 2024 in Riadh, Saudi Arabia. This is a competition organized for secondary school students from all over the globe to promote their creativity and cognitive skills in solving chemistry-related problems.
A total of 330 students from 90 countries participated in this prestigious competition this year. Committee members, Dr Chinthaka Ratnaweera and Dr Kushan Weerasiri accompanied the team as the mentors. Team was selected among the winners of the Sri Lanka National Chemistry Olympiad (SLNChO) competition compromised of the adavanced theory and the practical examinations condueted by the Sri Lanka Chemistry Olympiad committee (COSL) of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), which locally organizes this event. The dediacted committee members and lecturers from universities deserve the appreciation for training these talented students and preparing them for this highly compttitive examination. The COSL committee of the IChemC congratulates the winners of the IChO 2024 for bringing glory to the country.
