Principal of a school sans students

Thursday, 15th of November 2018

For more than 3 years the Principal of a school sans students, continues to serve as the Principal. Ms Finella Mendis, who was the Principal of Saddarmodhaya Vidyalaya Moratuwa, is still seen in her office, despite having no duties to perform. She said the school was closed down as there were only 12 students and 6 teachers. She said, however, there was no solution given to her regarding her post and she is now compelled to protect the school buildings, virtually performing the duties of a watcher.

Ms Mendis said the climate was no longer conducive to remain in the school. She said that protecting the school from drug addicts was another challenge, while keeping the place available for regular inspections for Dengue, was another issue. She said two classrooms are currently being used by St Sebastians Vidyalaya, due to a renovation at that school. Zonal Education Director SriLal Nonis said that, by January next year, they will find a school for her, as it usually takes time to hand over duties.
