Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka (COSL) Competition– 2019

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) is planning to conduct the Chemistry Olympiad Sri Lanka (COSL) competition in 2019 for the 3rd consecutive year in view of popularizing Chemistry and promoting the problem solving concept in Chemistry among the school children. We are pleased to invite all A/L Chemistry students to participate in this national event and to demonstrate their talents. The preliminary selection round for COSL competition will be held in January 2019 at twelve university campuses around the country and will be open for all students below 20 years of age as at 1st July 2019.

The duration of the examination will be two hours and will be conducted in all three languages English, Sinhalese and Tamil. The question paper will consist of multiple choice questions and structured type questions which covers the first 5 units of the advanced level Chemistry syllabus (i.e. Atomic structure, structure & bonding, chemical calculations, gaseous state of matters and, energetics), along with questions based on basic organic Chemistry including Stereochemistry. Depending on their performances at the preliminary examination, around 25 students will be invited to take part in the final round of the COSL. Theory and practical workshops will be conducted at the IChemC premises at Rajagiriya for the finalists prior to the final examination.

National level winners will be rewarded with scholarships, medals, certificates and monitory awards. In addition, students who score more than 50% marks from the preliminary examination will receive certificates of commendation. In order to cover the administrative and printing costs Rs 500 will be charged from each student.
