New premises for Moratuwa uni medical faculty

Monday, 20th of January 2025

The University of Moratuwa Faculty of Medicine is to be given alternative arrangements for hospital based clinical training instead of using the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine and the facilities of Dr Nevil Fernando Hospital. The first batch of medical students enrolled in the university based on the GCE (Advanced Level) 2019 results is scheduled to commence hospital-based clinical training in July 2025. Approval was granted to establish the Faculty of Medicine using the facilities of SAITM and the Dr Nevil Fernando Hospital for hospital- based clinical training.

However, using the hospital for clinical professor unit training has been an issue as the number of patients was less, the diversity of the patients’ diseases were insufficient, and the dearth of specialists was a problem. Accordingly, the cabinet of ministers approved the proposal to use the Kalutara Teaching Hospital, and Children’s Hospital for Mothers and Children at Mount Lavinia to ensure quality hospital-based clinical training to the medical students. The cabinet also decided to transfer two lands owned by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and Road Development Authority located at Nagoda West Grama Niladhari Division of the Kalutara Divisional Secretariat for the establishment of the faculty.
