The University of Colombo has been ranked as the best University in Sri Lanka and been placed between 1,001-1,200 universities in the world according to world university rankings for 2025 published this week. The University of Peradeniya has been placed second in the country and between 1,201 and 1,500. The other Lankan universities have been placed in positions above 1,500. Colombo has been placed first in Sri Lanka with 60.8 followed by Peradeniya with 56.8. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) said it had become the joint thirdbest university in Sri Lanka according to the rankings.
The USJ was listed in the same status in the rankings last year (2024 ranking), but has improved its performance this year, the University said. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings is one of the most prestigious and comprehensive university rankings in the world. It is based on 13 performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
