NIBM School of Computing organizes «SMART Life with IOT 2019”

NIBM School of Computing introduces a National wide Educational programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Education consisting of a with a series of workshops, seminars and a competition to educate the future generation in the advancing technologies. NIBM School of Computing with its 50 years of excellence offers the school leavers and employed professionals with the opportunity to obtain well recognised qualifications in diverse fields through certificate, diplomas, higher national diplomas, degree and masters programmes delivered affiliating with the world’s best universities.

We also cater to specific needs of the industry through customized training programmes and consultancy assignments which has provided vast industrial opportunities for our students. In fact, our main campus at Colombo and our regional centers in Kandy, Kurunagala, Galle and Matara ensures that equal access to quality education is available through NIBM to a wider range and a greater number of our valued students. The School of Computing offers BSc (Hons) Computing, BSc (Hons) Information Technology for Business, BSc(Hons) Ethical Hacking and Network security in the field of Information Technology and Computer Science offered by the Coventry University United Kingdom.

In addition, we have also affiliated with the University Technology Malaysia to offer Engineering Degree programmes to students in the fields of Electrical and Electronics Engineering namely BEng Electrical-Electronics & BEng Electrical-Mechatronics. Moreover, we have also successfully commenced a BSc (Hon’s) in Quantity Surveying Degree recently at NIBM. Year 2019 has been a new beginning to commence Masters Degree programmes with the Collaboration of International Universities and we are planning to commence the Master of Science (Information Security) in affiliation with the University Technology Malaysia in March 2019.

The School of Computing has also initiated a Venture Club which encourages students to explore entrepreneurship opportunities in a start-up ecosystem as we truly believe Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) encompasses the future of learning; thus we create individuals who are multitalented in interdisciplinary fields of expertise. The art of communication is the language of leadership. Therefore, we have also embarked the formation of the Toastmasters & Gavel Club for the staff & students to develop in their public speaking and leadership development skills which caters development of students to be better leaders.

With the advancements of science and technology it’s seen that a futuristic workforce is essential for the sustainable development of the national economy thus NIBM also has established the National Innovation Center collaborating with the private and public sectors of the nation to encourage the research and development sector of the country which collaborates with the NIBM School of Computing in the fields of Big Data Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning &Artificial Intelligence. With the dawn of the year 2019, NIBM School of Computing embarked on a National wide programme among school children to give them the opportunity to expand their talents in ICT Education.

The Internet of Things (IoT) acts as an expanded version of the internet, providing us with the data we need to live our lives more efficiently. In fact, it is based on connecting devices used daily, such as refrigerators, thermostats and HVAC systems, to a centralized cloud system. The data that comes in from these IoT devices lets us access and control technology through a web-based app and make sense of the information coming in. Therefore, with the technological advancements the Internet of Things has eased and personalized the way devices form a part of our world providing us with time and cost saving solutions in the digital world.

As we step into the digital world in the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is important that we educate our future generation of leaders with the use of smart technologies. The event titled as Smart Life with IOT Workshop and Competition for all School students is coordinated with the Ministry of Education & organised by the School of Computing of NIBM. A series of workshops and seminars are scheduled for over 2000 registered school students representing 100 schools which would be followed by a National IOT Competition. Smart Life with IOT Workshops are conducted every Wednesday from the 6th Feb 2019 to 27th March 2019.
