Creating a legacy of social responsibility and community…

Even though academic excellence is at the heart of everything done, ANC believes that education is much more than grades on a piece of paper: from sports, performing arts, and several student clubs and societies to seminars, workshops, and volunteering/ charity projects-there are opportunities to suit everyone, and it has been observed that they improve academic performance, employability, and citizenship of every participant. As far as character-building activities are concerned, ANC has a long tradition of undertaking service within the local community.

There are engaging and inspiring activities organized by the Internal Marketing team and several student clubs, Charity Club and Rotaract Club, for example. As students join hands with staff and faculty in organizing social and community development activities, they are often supported by well-wishers. 

What’s more, subject area clubs such as Psychology Society, Hospitality Club, and Business Club as well as Performing Arts Club for talented young artists encourage every student to make the most of opportunities ANC offers them. As part of Poson celebrations, ANC students, staff and well wishers teamed up with the Cancer Care Association. 

They visited Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama in addition to donating chemotherapy ports worth LKR 400,000 to the Association last week. Ms. Nisansala Rajapakshe and her team from Cancer Care Association assisted them in this event. The visit to the Cancer Care Hospice in Anuradhapura on June 30th will bring this momentous project to a successful conclusion. There are many ways the general public can contribute to this good cause. They include sponsoring a meal, donating medical equipment, attending to patients, participating in art therapy and music therapy activities for pediatric cancer patients, and helping the children of cancer victims with funding their education. Empathy for the suffering of others is seen as a special virtue by every religion. When the Buddha declared, “he who tends to the sick attends to me,” he emphasized the importance of compassion, kindness, and generosity.

In line with the Buddha’s teachings, the Poson project was to cultivate those qualities in students, for, in this day and age, the world needs more compassionate individuals willing to go the extra mile to “make it a better place for ... the entire human race.”
