The 14th Invitational under 14 Cricket Tournament for the Nelson Mendis Trophy got off and will come to a close on April 21. Organised by the CCC School of Cricket under the guidance of veteran coach Nelson Mendis, the tournament will take a break from April 12 to 16 for the Sinhala and Hindu New Year before reaching the final stages. CCC School of Cricket was started in February 1998 by Mendis who records 60 years of coaching and had produced 25 national players for Sri Lanka and has been in the forefront of Cricket Coaching Schools/ Academics in the island for the last 20 years. Notable absentees of this year’s tournament were the Indian Schools of Cricket as they had informed the inability of participation due to the schools examinations.
This year’s tournament was participated by 28 teams with teams from the outstations such as Kurunegala, Guruthalawa, Ambalangoda and Gampaha. There were seven teams making their debut in the competition. The 28 teams played in four groups in the preliminary round with seven teams in each group. Lasal, a Grade 11 student, has been able to fight his way through to becoming ninth in the selection event, knocking out some of the National level ‘Star Class’ players who were in the National Squad previously. The awards night will be held at the Bishop’s College Auditorium on Saturday April 21 at 6.30pm. Asanka Gurusinghe, the Manager of the Sri Lanka cricket team will grace the occasion as Chief Guest.
