Examinations schedule to be normalised within next two years

Monday, 10th of July 2023

The Education Ministry in consultation with the Examinations Department has decided to conduct two GCE (O/L) examinations in a bid to normalise the disrupted examination time table. Education Minister Susil Prmajayantha told Education Times that the first of the O/L exams to be held next year will be conducted in March, followed by another in December. This year the GCE A/L exam will be held from November 27 to December 21. Next year’s A/L exam is set to be held in August 2024. Minister Premajayantha said that after the exam backlog is cleared by end next year, the exam schedule could be normalised by 2025.

Under the normal system, the A/L exam was held in August and the O/L exam in December every year. However, due to several disruptions to educational activities over consecutive years, the exams calendar was completely interrupted. The disruption continued due to the economic crisis and the boycott of answer script marking. The Minister said that the original plan was to conduct the O/L exam scheduled for later this year at least by January 2024, but due to the paper marking issue the exam has now been pushed back to March 2024.

“We have held discussions for about a month trying to arrange the exam schedule; it has been a difficult process,” he said. “We are hopeful there will be no more disruptions and we can normalise the exam schedule,” he added. Examinations Commissioner General Amith Jayasundara told Education Times that final approval for the new exam schedule will receive final approval from the Ministry next week. (DWI)
