Faculties for different subjects and streams to be included
The Education Ministry has planned to upgrade the colleges of education to university status which will enable teachers to enter the profession with a degree in education. Under the plan 19 educational colleges will be turned into universities with a range of faculties in specified areas, Education Minister Susil Premajayatha said. There will be faculties of Information Technology, primary education, science and Maths, and other faculties. The students will be required to follow a course for four years which includes one year of training as teachers.
The students will be admitted based on the Z – score they receive at the G.C.E.A/L exams. The first batch will be admitted based on the 2021 A/L results. The Minister also said Cabinet approval would be sought soon, while the syllabuses had already been prepared to obtain approval from the University of Grants Commission (UGC). He said most of the other countries have separate universities for education and Sri Lanka is one of the countries which so far did not have a separate campus. The colleges of education currently enroll 4,000 students each year. Currently, the colleges of education offer only diplomas. The diploma course would continue to remain. (DWI)
