Sports will be allocated more space in the education reforms that will be introduced in January 2023, an Education Ministry official said recently. The Education Ministry along with stakeholders in the sports sector is planning to introduce a national sports plan that will aim at capacity building and changing the attitudes of schoolchildren. For this purpose annual recruits to the education sector from A/L students would be increased and they would undergo training at the Uva National College of Education as sports teachers. These sports trainers would undergo thorough technical and psychological training to teach sports in schools.
Also, it was planned to grant concessions for practices by allowing teachers to extend school hours until 3.30 pm to train students. The 2023 reforms would also introduce a new plan to continuously assess children in classrooms from grade 1 to 13. It was believed that classroom assessment together with A/L exam results would be a good measure of standards when assessing children for higher education and job opportunities. (CC)
