World Class Maths results at the British School in Colombo

Monday, 1st of February 2021

A world record has been set by the British School in Colombo. Five pupils Arun Sumathiratne, Mustafa Salman, Praveen Athauda-arachchi, Nathan Samuel and Senal Arsecularatne have each achieved an A* in IGCSE Maths at the Cambridge Assessment International Education. This is an amazing achievement for the young mathematicians aged 11 years old. Three of the boys achieved 98%, one 97% and one 96%. “I have been working in schools around the world for nearly 40 years but I have never had such amazing results from young students. Occasionally, a gifted student achieves an A grade pass at the IGCSE when they are 10 or 11 years old,” the school’s Principal John Scarth said.

“Such results from young children are highly unusual, and usually only one student would receive such results in the school. In our case we have five year six students, who achieved A* and this is truly amazing. The boys have worked so hard and shown fantastic resilience in dealing with the difficulties of the pandemic, while remaining focused on their studies,” Dr Scarth added. The boys are currently studying for their A/Ls in the mathematics stream and expect to complete their A/L exams in June 2022.
