Sri Lanka Girls Schools Netball team takes wing to Melbourne

Sri Lanka Girls Schools Netball team took wing to Melbourne, Australia on Thursday to take part in the Wycherley Schools International Netball tournament scheduled to be worked off from July 2 to5. Led by Sethmi Danoshi of Holy Family Girls School, Kurunegala, a strong and well-combined outfit will go all-out to occupy a top spot in this highly contested event. Danoshi will have Lavanga Kaluarachchi of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo as her deputy. Air tickets were provided by the Ministry of Sports for the team which was selected from an initial pool of over 170 Under-19 netball players from all parts of the island.

Just before their departure to the Kangaroo country, the young lasses lost a thrilling game by three points at the hands of the netball team selected to represent the country at the Asian Youth Netball tournament in Japan. The Sri Lankan girls have to match the height and speed of the other participating teams to give them a strong opposition to gain recognition as a strong outfit from South Asia. Yasanthi Kushanthika, the coach of Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya will be the head coach on the tour and Anoma Abeyratne, the Principal of Viharamahadevi Balika Vidyalaya, will accompany the team as Manager.

Diana Totawatta of Hapitigama Educational Sector will assist the head coach as the assistant while Vijitha Mallika, the Education Instructor of Hambantota Education Sector will be the officer-in-charge of the primary affairs. Shiranthi Prasadika Rajapaksha, an international referee and a staff member of St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Grandpass, is included in the tour party as a referee. Two players from each Sirimavo Bandaranaike Balika Vidyalaya and Holy Family Girls School of Kurunegala are included in the team.
