Career inspiration from Elon Musk

Elon Musk is the model, serial entrepreneur, with a long history of successes before the startups that made him famous. He is considered the 21st century equivalent of Einstein together with Steve Jobs. It is no surprise therefore that he has a fan following across the globe of science and technology enthusiasts, as well as upcoming and new start up entrepreneurs.

Have a compelling goal

Elon Musk is a man driven by goals bigger than himself. Be it PayPal, Tesla or SpaceX, he saw what the future would hold and therefore his team were able to subscribe to the goal too. His vision towards the goals has been unwavering, and the catalyst behind the success. “You want the future to be better than the past… Keep thinking about: are these efforts resulting in a better product or service – and if they’re not, stop those efforts.”

Don’t be delusional

With great wisdom, often comes arrogance. The only way to counter this is with humility. Therefore, never over estimate yourself, while underestimating others. “Constantly seek criticism. A well thought out criticism of whatever you’re doing is as valuable as gold.”

Work way too hard

This is the piece of advice that he gives the most. However, it isn’t mere rhetoric and can be seen in his life. When Tesla was going through production issues, Musk was known to sleep on the sofa in his office, so that he was always available and could give longer hours to work. “Just focus on one company – and throw as many hours at it as you possibly can. Work morning ’till night. Think about it in your sleep. Seven days a week. No breaks. Nothing. That’s what you should do when you’re starting a company.”

Start in Sri Lanka and Finish in America

One of the stepping stones in the life of Elon Musk was when he made the decision to leave Germany and go to America for his university education. “I think people can choose to be not ordinary. They can choose to not necessarily conform to the conventions that were taught to them by their parents. Yes, I think it’s possible to choose to be extraordinary.” In order to give Sri Lankan students the maximum opportunities, NCHS has affiliated with four California State Universities; California State University Monterey Bay, California State University San Marcos, California State University Bakersfield and California State University Humboldt.
