AOD presents Sri Lanka’s freshest design talent at REVEALGraduate Design Showcase 2018

Thursday, 22nd of November 2018

AOD connected its graduating students from the class of 2018 to powerful employment opportunities and work networks at REVEAL graduate design showcase. It featured design graduates from visual communication design, interior design, motion graphic design and animation, as well as fashion. The graduate exhibition attracted an audience with leading names in a wide cross-section of Sri Lankan industries like advertising, publishing, product exports, apparel, hospitality, homeware, architecture and interior design, signifying the importance that the business world places in design and innovation. REVEAL was held as part of the national celebration for design—Sri Lanka Design Festival: This meant that SLDF’s impressive global delegation consisting of international experts, academics, creative consultants and businesses linked to design and innovation, also became part of REVEAL’s audience.

The event was open to the public, giving students, and their parents an opportunity to engage in an exhibition that helped them understand the realities of careers and prospects in design. REVEAL was hailed as a success by industry and academic circles, as an essential portrayal of Sri Lanka’s next generation of professional designers, and an opportunity for the business world and the general public to access fresh talent that can integrate innovation with commercially viable ideas. REVEAL Graduate Design Showcase was held at Trace Expert City in Colombo with Sri Lanka Design Festival 2018, during the November 9, 10 and 11 weekend. T he REVEAL Graduate Design Showcase is held annually as one of Sri Lanka’s largest displays of contemporary design. Hosted annually by the country’s most active catalyst for design and innovation—AOD—this graduate exhibition is known to create powerful opportunities for young designers by expanding career networks and link up new work prospects, making it the ideal platform for professionals who are at the early stages of their creative careers.

In its recently completed 2018 edition as well, it allowed AOD’s outgoing students to meet potential employers from around the world as well as Sri Lanka’s business sector. The graduate design showcase proved to be a fantastic opportunity for the young designers to form useful networks with other designers and gain valuable exposure as they step into the professional world. REVEAL also fulfilled another key aspiration, by linking this fresh talent to the international world of design—a channel highly appreciated by global businesses that are constantly in search of unusual designers from interesting cultures like those in South Asia. AOD’s educat ion model considers these global connections as central to their approach to design education, as they allow AOD graduates to access the viewpoints and ideas from diverse cultures and backgrounds, and design philosophies of some of the leading creative names, design influencers and thought leaders.

With exposure to design thinking from Europe, North America, Scandinavian nations and Asia, AOD has the ability to produce graduates with a well-rounded global perspective, who become a highly valued talent resource to the local industries that are trying to reach international markets. REVEAL was also frequented by students and young people aspiring to work in design disciplines like interior architectural design, visual communication design, motion graphics and animation design as well as fashion. The event helped these young creatives to access a new understanding of the current standards in design practices and related businesses, through a dedicated alumni section that presented a selection of successful designers, design labels and studios from AOD’s past graduate network.

This exhibition shed light on what professional traits and practices are needed to succeed as a creative professional, and the way in which design networks, international links and industry patronage become essential in building young careers.
