A Better Education Makes a Better Society – George Swinburne”

The Nawaloka College of Higher Studies together with the Swinburne University of Technology celebrated its 4th graduation on the 26th of October, at the Galadari Hotel, Colombo. The event was held under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, M.P. Minister of Higher Education & Cultural Affairs, Sri Lanka. The gala event was attended by dignitaries, friends, family and well wishes. The graduation saw the awarding of diplomas in Business Studies, Engineering and Information Technology and Health Science. High achieving students was awarded scholarships for the next phase of their degree, while students who had performed well in their O/L and A/L exams were awarded scholarships to commence their diplomas. The graduation was followed by a Gatsby themed graduation ball later that night. The Hon. Minister in his keynote address stated that many Sri Lankan youth are deprived of Higher Education due to the limited places in the nation’s universities.

He therefore reiterated the importance of institutions such as NCHS, that provide a valuable service by providing highly recognized qualifications with highly sought after subjects. “I am grateful to Dr. Dharmadasa for establishing this institution,” he said. Deputy Vice Chancellor, Swinburne University of Technology, Mr. David Coltman, explained to the graduated that a graduation is the acknowledgement of a combination of studies, hard work and achievement. “Swinburne takes pride in its quality education. Today is the celebration of a graduation of students with high quality education” he stated. The Deputy High Commissioner of Australia, Victoria Coakley, said that in choosing Swinburne, the students invested in quality education. She quoted the founder of the university, George Swinburne, who stated that ‘A better education makes a better society’.

She said that the students had gained qualifications that equipped them to be ‘work ready’. A student representative, Rishani Hansika Madiweka, addressed the gathering on behalf of the student body. She explained that her time at NCHS had been wonderful and life changing. “We all chose NCHS for various reasons. Yet we all learnt the meaning and value of hard work and success” she said. She thanked the academic staff for going the extra mile to ensure that students succeed, and the administrative staff for their support at all times. Special mention was made to Dr. Alan Robertson, Dean of Studies, Nawaloka College of Higher Studies, who was a constant source of encouragement for all the students.
