Engineering the Future: SLIIT Computing launches BEng Honours Degree in Electronic & Electrical Engineering

SLIIT Computing in association with Liverpool John Moores University, UK has launched a 3 year rou te towards aBEng (Honours) degree programme in Electronic & Electrical Engineering with registrations for the January 2018 intake now open. The launch of the new degree programme route is a game changing event in Sri Lanka as SLIIT Computing is the first reputable institution to provide for a mid-level degree programme in electronic & electrical engineering.

SLIIT Computing is a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka I n s t i t u t e o f I n f o r mat i o n Technology (SLIIT), which is the largest IT degree awarding institute in Sri Lanka in the field of Information Technology, recognized by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act. Over 17+ years’ SLIIT has been offering IT, Business & Engineering degree programmes. The new programme will provide students with a well-rounded cutting edge knowledge base in electronic and electrical engineering, comprehensively covering all essential areas whilst equipping them with all the skills they will require to pursue the profession successfully.

SLIIT and SLIIT Computing have a long standing relationship and arrangement with Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, which is a highly ranked university with a vibrant community of 25,000 students from 100 countries, offering 250+ degree programmes. The university was awarded the University of the Year Award for 2017 at the “Educate north and UK leadership awards and conference” and it is one of the largest and most-dynamic universities in UK.

The new degree program will allow students to undertake projects that will allow them the freedom to design their own solutions to problems. Students will also be supported with seminars on commercial project development, which will cultivate key skills required to plan and manage projects. Discussing the newly available degree program, Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice Chancellor/CEO of SLIIT and Managing Director/CEO of SLIITC, said, ‘We identified that there was a huge vacuum for qualified electronic and electrical engineers in Sri Lanka.However, only few opportunities for those who want to pursue that career path.

This is what inspired us to provide a BEng programme in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Successful completion of the programme will enable students to graduate with a degree qualification. We look forward to our first intake for the programme, commencing January 2018.’ As qualified electronic and electrical engineers, graduates will have a world of opportunities opened up to them and be able to work on a variety of projects that involve computers, robots, cell phones, cars, radar and navigation systems, wiring & lighting systems, automation industry and a host of other electrical systems.

Power Systems Engineering, Product Development Engineering, Project En g i n e e r i n g and Pr o c e s s Engineering are some of the more popular career paths that will be open to graduates. Applicants will require 3 passes at the Local/ London GCE Advanced Level Examination (Maths / Technology stream)to be eligible for acceptance into the SLIITC HND programme, and will then be eligible for progression onto the final year for BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Students awaiting their examination results are also eligible to apply for provisional registration. Further, professionals who already possess higher national diploma or equivalent qualification pertaining to relevant field could enter in to the final year of electronic and electrical engineering degree program subject to acceptance by LJMU.
